This played on Radio 1 earlier today, and was uploaded about 6 hours ago on Stereo-Gum. It’s from the new Fleet Foxes album coming out later this year.

It’s called Battery Kinzie.

You’ve gotta check it out a two disk delicious production by Ryan Adams called Cold Roses.

I recommend the songs “Magnolia Mountain” and “Let it Ride.”

Phew! Fleet Foxes has been off of the radar for a bit, after leader Robin Pecknold took a bit of a hiatus to regain a connection to his Muse with a couple side projects that turned out really well (White Antelope and touring with Joanna Newsome).

So, it’s a relief afterall, dearest ones, to know that Fleet Foxes will be releasing a new album soon! They’ve mixed it and they’re pretty happy with it. So, I own that you can be expecting that in the nearness.

Okay, I’m baking some Cornish game hens in the oven, to which I needs must tend.

Dear All,
The Country genre has been pretty badly maimed; it’s been dominated by pop artists for far too long. Although not all country music is bad, I would say the majority of it is.
There have been a few bright stars: Jonny Cash, Steve Earle (played a song with the Pogues once!), Uncle Tupelo, and Chris Ledoux (to name a few of the few). Many bands that may be labeled as “Country” go for “alt country” or “American” or “Bluegrass.” But I haven’t yet seen a band label themselves as pure country and not sound like plastic shit – until I heard Ryan Bingham.
This guy is for real totally legit. He’s had a tough life. He’s got a deep whiskey cigarette voice that tells stories. He labels himself as Country music. His music is moving, energetic, charged by the Texas landscape from which he hails. I thoroughly enjoy listening to him.
Go to his website and play some of his music. Listen to this song from the Dave Letterman show. He wrote the theme to the movie Crazy Heart (staring Jeff Bridges).
Blue Ridge Mountains by Fleet Foxes
In my opinion the beginning of the song lightly and effortlessly sets the scene, taking you far off to another place. The verses are more concrete until the drums start, at which point you leave society and enter the “quivering forest.” The outro mirrors again the beginning as if to close the story.
This song is a delight. It haunts, and without trying, it falls into a tradition of folk: the song tells a story. This song means a lot to me, being from Virginia, through which the Blue Ridge Mountains pass. Fleet Foxes’ aspirant vocals and driving beat coupled with fantastic lyrics create a compelling song.
Enjoy.
