“Offering”

Duncan Smith (a graduate of St. Gregory’s Academy and brother to Philip and Andrew Smith and son of Gordon Smith) recently completed this film “Offering.”

-Bloch-Party

All Hallows Eve

and is it that surprising that after wanting
to be Mark Zuckerberg and Mary Tetzlaf
was going to be Facebook, I decided not to do that at all?
I ended up entering into a party costumed
as none other than the hilarious and multi-tasking
(and not as racist as they say he is) Huck Finn.
for the equation I got a pipe (functional),
jeans, suspenders (must have), shoes like

Sercer’s shoes (you know the ones I be talking about),

a straw hat (incredibly deteriorated and dilapidated),

and some hipster glasses (I couldn’t see without them).

Candy, beer, Jager, Cigs, and a little singing and dancing to the 90′s.

we raised a glass to JFK and others still besides.
I guess I left that night with a little bit of a better idea of how
the demos works.

[ “Did you have a good Halloween?” he asked himself. ]

I went shopping at Whole Foods today.

That lady was helpful, scary, yes, but helpful.

And I chuckled out loud (they might have thought I was crazy)

in the Arizona Art Supply store.

I needed Acrylic paint for tomorrow.

Banalities…all is banal

The State Fair has a bit of spill over garbage;

it makes water on the wall in the alley across the street.

But the sunrise and sunset and moonrise

And moonset happens each and ev’ry day.

And yet we pass this by without a thought.

And damnit that is in pentameter.

Guess What?

Flaskback, literally

The University Shield

As some of you may know, last year an impassioned group of us began a publication at UD called The University Shield. We were largely successful with the two issues we printed and distributed last spring, and so, we have picked up the project once again and are publishing the first issue of this semester tomorrow.

I have not (as of yet) figured out how to post a .pdf file online. If I have a few spare minutes to play around on the computer and figure out that doo-daddy trick, then by all means, it will be up. BUT, for the time being, if you’d like a copy delivered straight to your personal email inbox, then please, shoot me an email at katieprejean741@gmail.com and I’ll be sure to send it your way.

The issue this month is dedicated to the many priests and religious that have helped shape our beloved UD, and so we have 2 quite dense and lengthy articles about the Cistercian’s influence on UD and the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur. The articles will certainly be enjoyable to you (I think) and move your hearts and minds to loving this place even more.

So recap: email me at katieprejean741@gmail.com and I’ll send you a copy of the Shield.

Cheers,

Katie

Athwartships

Athwartships

Fair she came, and, fair she went:
Tumbling, then, tumbling spent.

Purple quartz, and, garnet stone
Were somehow, and, left alone.

How were some, then, left amain?
The fair, she came, fair she went.

Lux

Lux is better than you–it is meta.  Lux (light).  Lighthousing in the Arizonian darkness.  It’s a beacon of fresh crunchy local art, culture, and goods.  This beacon is home to a fleet of ipod computers (called macs or ipads or imacs or something) a place of unbridled free thought for the rare hipster-sapien, and the best damn iced-mocha west of the Mississippi!

Diagramming Sentences

Since I’ve begun teaching middle school, my intellectual life has taken a dramatic turn “back to the basics”, as they say.  Well, it certainly has been a turn for the better because through such turning back, we can, ultimately, move much farther forward.   Eugene Moutoux is a language professor…. (somewhere) and he has written several books on sentence diagramming–among other things.

So the main reason I’m posting this is because he has an awesome mustache.  AND I thought it time to share my grammatical joys with my friends.    So, just as we all enjoy taking time to re-read fairy tales and poems from childhood, perhaps you’d be interested in checking out Eugene’s amazing diagramming from basic sentences such as: The people should laugh. to the  intricacies of the Gettysburg Address.

He’s from Kentucky and he also diagrams in German.

Diagramming sentences can be fun.

Regina Laudis

Re: Does anybody know of …

I’d encourage everyone to check out the Abbey of Regina Laudis monastic internship program. Laura and I will be putting off marriage for a year after I leave SGA so I can do this. Well, maybe not; but seriously: it’s something I’m recommending to the graduating SGAers, and it sounds like a boat I would have jumped on, if I’d known about it, upon graduating from UD.

Monastic Studies: Gregorian Chant, Latin, Monastic History, Monastic Liturgy, Monastic Theology, Scripture Studies, Ritual and Creation, The Rule of St. Benedict

he Monastic Internship Program is open to men and women who are 18 years of age or older. Enrollment is limited. Acceptance is discerned through a process of personal interviews and time spent at the Abbey, as well as through a written application. The interns live in housing provided by the Abbey and are invited to share as guests in the rhythm of work and prayer that structures the life
of the community, though no religious affiliation is required. The Internship may begin at any time of the year, but requires a full year’s commitment. A shorter term introductory Monastic Practicum is also available. The Internship Program is certified to accept international students.

Bookbinding? Beekeeping? Gregorian Chant? Cheesemaking? If the internship is as good as advertised, we all need to go there!

Surprise!

the heart rears wings bolder and bolder; and hurls for him, O half hurls earth for him off under his feet

So… it really is true my friends. I saw them both myself and snatched this photo of them.

What a delightful weekend some of us got to spend in Scranton PA recently. I wish you all could have been there, but trust that we most definitely toasted all of you at some point, and probably sang your favorite song, and loved you while doing so.
